Social media help for small businesses - 2010
A new idea to help small businesses and at the same time provide employment pathway opportunities for young people has been hatched in Brunswick Heads.
A pilot program has been developed by the Brunswick Head Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Byron Region Community College and the local employment providers. It's the first time these organisations have worked together on a project.
The concept
The concept is a simple one of matching needs, and it's very exciting according to Kim Rosen, who has been working to get the project up since last September.
Small business e-marketing needs
Small business needs to embrace the new technology to maintain an edge, especially in these tough economic times. Although a number of e-marketing workshops are being run to skill up business people in the use of the new social media tools for marketing businesses, some businesses owners are just not in a position apply this technology themselves.
Young talent
Yet we have savvy young people with natural talent in the social media area and this talent is underutilised. Why not match the two together and create new opportunities for employment?
The Social Media Course
Byron Region Community College successfully sourced funding from the NSW Department of Education to run the "Marketing Small Business Using Social Media" training course, the first of its kind.
There are 12 places in the short e-marketing certificate course for people who are already proficient in social media/networking and are looking to learn how to apply their skills. The course costs only $50 and provides a Statement of Attainment from Certificate IV Small Business in three units of competency.
It will be held every Tuesday from 9am to 4pm for 6 weeks (from 25th May to June 29th) in the Byron Community College Computer Training rooms in the Byron Industrial Estate. It will be conducted by computer tutor, Diane Christie and small business tutor, Andrea Herraman, both dynamic and experiences teachers in their fields.
Placing graduates in businesses
When the course is completed, graduates will be matched with small businesses who are looking for part-time assistance with e-marketing and social media to promote and grow their businesses.
If your business would benefit from having one of these graduates to help you promote and grow your business, this is an opportunity not to be missed. Several Brunswick businesses have already expressed interest.
Three employment providers in Brunswick Heads are keen to assist with the matching process and TURSA Employment and Training has already committed to be part of this innovative pilot program by assisting with placements of their clients who undertake the course. Varying levels of wage subsidy are available to help businesses take on one of these graduates. Nortec and Jobfind are also interested in participating in this exciting program.
It's hard for small businesses to fund new employees, especially in the current economic climate, but as businesses grow, more long term employment opportunities are created, so this should be a win-win program for everyone.
How to participate
Interested course applicants can apply through TURSA, Nortec or Jobfind in Brunswick Heads or contact Kim Rosen directly 0412 316 299 or krosen@mullum.com.au by May 7th.
Kim is also taking enquiries from businesses which are interested in tapping into this pool of fresh talent and being part of the new initiative.
