Brunswick Skatepark launch - Sun 18 April

The Brunswick Heads skatepark was officially opened on Sunday 18th April 11am - 1pm.

After a big downpour at 8am, the oganisers were a bit worried. Council staff quickly pumped the water from the bowl and the sun shone all day!

Byron Shire Council and the Sk8Brunswick launched the day. Cr Diane Woods gave a brief run down of the 10 year journey to make the skatepark dream come through and thanked all those who didn't give up. The ribbon was cut and the kids presented Cr Woods with a giant signed thank you card.

There were awesome pro skater demonstrations by the Afends team, with commentation by Kent Wright - incredible displays in the deep bowl and on the street skate section and even aerial jumps from one to the other. Expression sessions for the younger ones followed.

Mullumbimby Rotary sold out of sausages for their sizzle twice and Juices 2Ukept the thirsts quenched.

About the Brunswick Heads skatepark

Brunswick Heads Skate Park is 465m2 and has a great bowl with a shallow end at 1500mm deep and a deep end of 1800mm with 2400mm radius's. It has banks, ledges and rails. Basically there is a bit of everything with the bowl being the stand out feature. It's located on the south side of Brunswick Heads on the Old Pacific Highway next to the Bowling Club.

The Brunswick Heads skatepark as is a great example of how good design can overcome serious space and financial constraints to produce a great facility for skateboards, bikes and scooters and be suitable for all ages and standards.

Sk8Brunswick Taskforce

The Brunswick Heads skatepark was designed by David Clancy from Oasis Skateparks and built in February 2010 by Rob Lewers from Concrete Skateparks, with funding from Byron Shire Council.

Back in about 1994, Michelle Grant and Leonie Bolt from the Brunswick Heads Progress Association organised a streetskate area in the old tennis courts for the kids.

The Brunswick Heads Chamber of Commerce organised a Youth Forum in 2000 and asked the kids what they wanted. The answer was clear - a skatepark with a bowl.

Sk8Brunswick, a taskforce of the Brunswick Heads Chamber of Commerce initiated the skatepark project, and has seen it through many  hurdles to completion, ten years later. The skatepark was completed at the end of March, just in time for the Easter school holidays holidays.

The skatepark cost $125K and the design, tender process, site works, landscaping, pergolas, tables and bubbler will bring in in about $180K.
