Forest to Farm Book by Frank Mills
The story of the first fifty years of European settlement on the Brunswick River.
Second edition.
This book chronicles the history of the Brunswick Valley - the last of the northern rivers to be documented in any systematic way. The chronicle begins with Captain Rous, who found 'another river' as he sailed northwards in 1828. From there the story winds itself through the bush with the cedar getters, first settlers and early farmers who experimented with crops as diverse as sugar, tobacco, coffee and bananas.
The book also details the building of the rail line, the council, the history of communication, industry, religion, education, commerce and sport.
There are scores of funny, sad and outrageous stories from the important historical events, and Jim Brokenshire, an old time newspaper man, has searched the contemporary newspapers to find them.

Diversity, one of the most prized qualities of the Byron Shire, is captured here as a surprisingly normal quality.
This contemporary look at how a community works provides a rare and valuable insight into an interesting shire.
A century of local government in Byron Shire is a fitting context to review some if its history and some of its people who have deep roots in the shire.
